It's a really straightforward one:

Max is the Devil, keeping all of the nerds in line. It's willed into existence and enforced by peer pressure - Red Eyes/Red Glow are a substitute for loose chains from the original card.

i had a question about your character design for the simulation swarm mutations- did you get the idea for the elbow claws/pincers from somewhere specific? or were you just like "wow that would be cool as hell"

its an aspect of your design that intrigued me a lot- you really don't see them in any other plagas au.

I'm happy to present a small snippet of the fully completed anatomy sheet to help me with this explanation!

A lot of my major inspiration for the Simulation Swarm mutations that present in Leon, Ashley and Ada is from three things: Verdugo, Emperor Scorpions, and the Original U3/It design!

Generally, a lot of the form comes from Verdugo, though they technically share more genetic material with U3. Considering Verdugo was a more 'refined' version of U3, the mutations seen in Simulation Swarm are considered not only a third and final attempt by Talavera prior to his complete turn to his insanity, but a more direct relative of U3 referred to affectionally as 'Cordero', U4, Plagas Scorpion, or U3-Cordero, dependent on the researcher.

Primary elements with the overall design did 'require' the mutated subjects to be arachnids- though Verdugo is not technically an arachnid, U3, the base Plagas, and scorpions are all considered arachnids and do have 4 sets of limbs. (Even if U3's are... a little skewed, but it counts.) (Also also, U-8 from RE6 which is a complete arthropod with somewhat more of a crustacean like structure, which also implies upwards of four additional U mutates, but that's a whole other story.)

Anyway, for me, this meant I needed to give our Plagas Scorpions four limbs. Or, well the implication of four limbs.

The primary function of the pincers evolving from the points of the elbows is that their arms were supposed to 'split' of the forearm, giving them an outer thick shelled pincer limb (which admittedly has more of a lobster shape) and a thinner, inner 'scooping' limb with those fancy opposable thumbs. However, the mutation is incomplete, as only a partial deposit of the genetic material was completed- so, their arms didn't split, but instead became double.

As for the fourth set of limbs... they don't have one, I hear you say! The thing is, they were supposed to. They have deep set spines/bones in their hips with a vestigal muscle structure that just... never continued to develop! That was going to be the fourth set of limbs!

THEY DO! Squirmles squeak, sort of like rodents or little frogs. Ofc their language isn't complex, but they use different types of squeaks and trills to convey different things! Such as "Hello!" "Go away!" "I found food!" and "you are my friend!" Sometimes when squirmles are attacking a person, you'll hear little squeaks from the monsters. This is oftentimes them communicating with their swarm-mates ( "I found the sweet spot!" ).

Anyway, I've been sitting on this doodle/meme redraw since midterms started. They're kicking my ass.

Nevertheless, I imagine Leon was a pretty avid Gameboy player back in his academy days. Having one scrounged up and still working is a pretty exciting event! Is it Super Mario World 2? Pokemon Red? Spirit: The Stallion of Cimarron? Who knows! What he does know is that his kiddos need to be cultured. Thankfully for them, this is the most interesting thing that's happened in months.

So with the announcement that they're adding the "Galfrey corruption" arc for Devil Knight-Commanders, I had some thoughts on how they might be going about it and what they'll use as the basis.

My take? It's going to be based on her guilt for the Act IV Abyss trip, her desperation to save Mendev, how emotionally vulnerable both make her is in Act V, and her utter frustration at Mendev's nobility and the rest of Avistan for leaving it as her burden to shoulder. Heavy a burden as it is, that wouldn't break her. She's held Mendev together despite most of the still-alive nobility seeming to be like Daeran or Camellia - she can endure a bit more.

But when she returns from Iz, when she sees just how fast the house of cards fell apart? When she realizes just how badly the people beneath her have been acting when she isn't marching an army to their city? With her humanity essentially reawakened and able to feel every iota of anger, frustration, and exhaustion she's been bottling up for a century? That is when a Devil KC can step in and start to convince her that trying to rule justly as Iomedae teaches just held her back. To persuade her to indulge in some of her own darker urges like putting her sabaton on an annoying nob's neck. Perhaps even use a spell to be the literal devil on her shoulder for a bit during a day in court.

All in the name of Mendev and the Crusades, of course. It's harsh but necessary. Clearly, the ungrateful swine didn't appreciate her just rule before. Now she can make them wish they had as she drags Mendev to survival whether it wants it or not. I suspect that Galfrey's corruption will look like a "True Aeon" playthrough on the surface, but the motive becomes Galfrey's own frustrations being let loose in a very bad way. At some point, she starts indulging in her own desires outright rather than just 'harsh for the cause', all as the KC serves to enable those desires and keeps away those that might try to help Galfrey in this crisis of faith such as Irabeth.

Though if this is the angle they go for, I dearly hope that Owlcat makes it so that she has to actually trust you or see you as someone she can rely on. Those that are pricks to her for the sake of being pricks (you can still argue against her, but actually engage with her arguments instead of being petty) should be unable to corrupt Galfrey as they're the same kind of prick that she might want to stomp on. After all, it'd be perfectly fitting for a devil's carefully laid plan to fall apart because they were too petty... and a truly wise devil should be able to put aside revenge as a sucker's game to strengthen their own hand.

In short? I expect that the Devil KC is basically going to gaslight Galfrey into thinking that her allies had gatekept her, and that she should girlboss in the worst way possible to "save" Mendev.

Haven't got through the realis episodes yet but just that the text is meant to be a game written in setting from a single and biased perspective, and Austin saying he'd be interested in doing further stuff from another in-setting perspective.

I am now captivated by the possibility (or impossibility) of Bug Realis. Explicitly how would you rewrite Realis if you were trying to play it as a bug, or even a swarm of bugs, who live under an imperialist state?

Hypercollaborative storytelling? Crowd play? The stronger your sentence the more people have to say it- and the saying of it allows them to change it mid sentence? This is nothing but I'm having fun here.

It's like how you get communist or capitalist rewrites of board games, but the ideology presented is "it's sick as hell to be a ginormous insect and/or multiple large bugs."
